Game Venue

The Queen's Theatre in Gilles Arcade/Playhouse Lane is the oldest purpose-built theatre on mainland Australia. Built in late 1840, it is of national heritage significance. The only theatre in Australia that predates it is the Theatre Royal in Hobart, Tasmania. The Queen's Theatre is remarkable in that approximately half of the original above-ground structure survives and there are significant below-ground remains.

The nearest backpackers is actually on street over, being the Shakespeare's Backpacker's International Hostel on Waymouth St. I'm not sure if it's necessarily the cheapest place in Adelaide or not, but the fact it is very close by at least could prove helpful for those wanting to stagger to venue after a night of drinking.

According to its website, its prices are:

  • $33 Share Dorm
  • $26 - YHA, VIP Discount
  • $85 - Private Twin/Single (weekly rates can be negotiated)
  • $85 - Private Room w/ Double Bed (children under 13 free, extra adults pay standard dorm rates)
  • $162 - 1 Week Dorm Bed

Group bookings are subject to negotiated rates, so it might be possible to have a BtS dorm organised if enough people are interested. Room sizes are 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 or 12 per dorm.

For those with a bit more cash to play with or who just want more space and privacy, there's close by serviced apartments via Quest on King William St, which I believe have four night packages which would cover the Noctis weekend quite nicely.

According to their website it's possible to get a 2 bedroom apartment for $414/night which could sleep five people via a combination of queen or single beds and sofa bed. The various features are listed on the website, although kitchen facilities and room means it's probably a better option than a backpackers for those with kids. It's also right next to the mall, in addition to being ten minutes away from venue.

Finally, for those who want the hotel option, there is the Hotel Grand Chancellor on Currie and on Hindley which actually looks cheaper than serviced apartments, with five occupants in two rooms being $319 for a 21 day advance booking, with possible further discount for a multiple day package. I've had family stay there before and can say that's it's fairly nice, although the rooms are fairly small.

There's a whole range of other Backpackers and hotels nearby for those who want to explore other options. There are several hotels along North Terrace and Victoria Square, and a cluster of Backpackers along King William St and Grote St, near the interstate bus terminal.
